“An Unlocked Door”

I thought time was my protector,
but time had taught me to forget.
I left the window open,
I forgot to lock the doors,
and your footsteps were loud
in my empty halls.
You said I was a safe place,
and I thought that I was safe.
Then your voice
became the birdsong in the morning;
your smile,
the sun through opened blinds.
You are the scent of rain on thirsty ground,
the glimpse of ocean around the bend.
You walk me in a summer’s night,
wrap me up in the winter chill.
The frontier of my imagination
has let me down before;
led me to a place reduced to dust,
to the ring of empty halls.
