Regret

Small ebony box of regret,
full of lost expectations,
opened to reveal a huge expanse
of unresolved emotion.
Throbbing with life,
I felt its answering ache
in my heart.
Lies and insecurities
wrapped around eachother
in exultant collusion.
Three pairs of blue eyes
glint seductively from the past.
Dark corners hide the shame,
faded from red to brown,
beautifully tragic with age.
Words said and words unspoken
resound in an inaudible din.
Faces unmarked by time,
gold-framed in a moment.
Names without addresses,
and doors shut forever.
Sentries of indecision and curiosity
lock swords in endless battle,
while life slips by unnoticed.
