Old Friend

You take me back to my youth.
My lips know your lips;
my body remembers yours.
Half a lifetime of hopes,
of regret and pain,
tries to lay its icy arm between us,
protecting itself
with our carefully chosen words.
I cover myself in half light,
hoping you won’t see the scars
of flesh and heart.
But the first kiss shatters it all,
to bare myself willingly
to the unfamiliar possibility
of warmth,
and the familiar one
of pain, rejection and expectation;
the icy adrenalin
burning away the shell
like a poisonous balm.
But I would rather jump and fall
in terrifying ecstasy,
than float directionless
in a soundless pool,
safe but sad…
