A Gift Unopened

I want to stay my mind
on eternal truths;
rest my mind
on things of beauty.
But like a truant
it always wanders
into dark corners,
trying to grasp shadowy shapes,
shifting and elusive;
the mysterious always so alluring
wrapped in black.
Some things are so familiar
you miss their beauty;
so honest
you overlook their complexity,
until one day
you might lament
that gift you never opened,
the page you never turned…
